Independence

Richard Edwin Fienen age 97 of Independence, Kansas died Thursday, February 17, 2022 at the Labette Health Hospital in Independence, Kansas.

Celebration of Life Services will be held Wednesday, February 23, 2022, 10:00am at the Zion Lutheran Church with the Pastor Kevin Peterson officiating. Burial will follow in the Mount Hope Cemetery under the direction of the Webb & Rodrick Chapel.

Visitation hours will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 22, 2022 at the Zion Lutheran Church with the family receiving friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friends may leave online condolences at www.webbrodrickchapel.com.

The family has suggested memorials to the Zion Lutheran Church Restoration Fund and contributions may be left at the Webb & Rodrick Chapel.

Richard Edwin Fienen was born January 23, 1925 in Independence, Kansas to John P. Fienen Sr. and Maria L. (Klintworth) Fienen.  He grew up in Independence, Kansas and attended the Zion Lutheran School before graduating from the Independence High School. After graduation Richard joined the United States Army Air Corp and served during World War II.

On December 26, 1946 Richard married Elizabeth L. Brewster in Brighton, Colorado where the couple made their home until moving to Independence, Kansas in 1949. Richard worked at the Fienen Grocery Store as a butcher. He then went to work for Electra Manufacturing in 1954 until his retirement in 1989. Richard was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church and held numerous offices over the years. He loved bowling, woodworking and old cars.

Survivors include three sons Roger and wife Melanie Fienen of Harrisonville, Missouri, Mark and wife Sheryl Fienen of Independence, Kansas and Todd and wife Patty Fienen of Independence, Kansas; one daughter Janet and husband John Blurton of Independence, Kansas; one brother Elmer Fienen of Independence, Kansas; one sister-in-law Norma Jean Fienen of Pampa, Texas; eight grandchildren Brad Dillon, Jason Fienen, Brad Fienen, Matt Blurton, Jacob Blurton, Angie Alexander, Katie Fienen and Taylor Mosier; 12 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Betty, one daughter Barbara Fienen Benson and three brothers, John P. Fienen, Jr., Norman Fienen, and Marvin Fienen.
